Re: Topic 2 DQ 2 COVID 19 has shined a light on the nursing profession more than ever before. The term “The year of the nurse” has been used widely to show appreciation for the nursing communities’ efforts to combat the pandemic. We see daily pictures on television of heroic nurses as well as signs thanking nurses as frontline workers fight to save lives amongst this pandemic. The mere mention of our profession, even to strangers, is followed by a “Thank you for your service” The nursing profession has been elevated to the status of war time hero. As we continue to fight the pandemic, the publics opinion of the nursing profession has changed for the better. Television influences the public’s view of the profession of nursing greatly. It is unfortunate that before the pandemic, nurses made headlines when a negative event occurred. In recent years, the misperception of nursing has been highlighted by celebrities. Lack of knowledge about the profession has led to comments that degrade nursing. One comment in particular sparked an uproar in the nursing community. When a cohost from The view commented about a nurse wearing a “doctor’s stethoscope”.
The nursing community turned to Facebook to call for action. In the end, it proved that the public’s view of nursing was a naive and called for action to be taken to educate the public on the role nursing profession. Another disturbing trend in television is the creation of television shows based on the downfall of nurses. For example, currently Netflix is featuring shows and documentaries depicting horrible acts by nurses. One fictional television show in particular is Nurse Jackie (Brixius, Wallem, Edunsky, 2009) it is about emergency room nurse who succumbs to narcotic addition and commits horrible acts to obtain pain pills. Another example, of a television show misrepresenting the nursing profession is the television show Scrubs. Unfortunately, it takes a light hearted approach to a very serious profession. It is very disheartening that these and other television shows portray nursing in a negative light. In the end, as a profession we need to continue to educate the public about the nurse’s role in health promotion. COVID 19 helped promote nursing as an essential profession to care for ill patients. However, the public needs to be aware of a nurse’s role in helping to keep patients out of the hospital and thriving at home. Currently, nurses are thought of as hospital workers, but health care is changing, and health promotion is more important now than ever. Some homecare agencies are advertising through commercials and media to advocate the role of the nurse in home care. Another avenue to pursue in educating the public is social media. We have a platform to education the public and work within Facebook groups to educate patients and families about nursing and our role in health promotion in this arena nurses can establish themselves as leaders and promote the profession in a positive way. Overall, nurses should advocate against television shows that degrade the profession and promote the positive image of nursing. Lastly, simply by providing the best care and upholding our professional integrity we can change the public perception of nursing. If we ensure that clients have a positive experience when exposed to the health care environment nurses are ensuring that public opinion is different from the images seen on television.
