Risk of Vaping

In 2006, the United States started seeing a new “smoking cessation” product being sold that was to be a healthier alternative to cigarettes called E-cigarettes, or electronic cigarettes. Shortly after their emergence, regulations were placed on E-cigarettes so that they could not be marketed as therapeutic or healthier, but that did not stop the influx of people who were buying and using them. The E-cigarettes, which were originally made to look like cigarettes, were quickly developed into new devices that had a more aesthetically pleasing look and different flavors that could be inhaled to get nicotine. This is assumed to be the reason in the influx of sales and use amongst all ages, but specifically teens and young adults (Cobb, N. K., & Solanki, J. N., 2020). With the influx of E-cigarettes and other vaping devices, health issues were quick to follow. Mainly respiratory issues arose such as pulmonary toxicity. When physicians could not pin-point the exact disease, the CDC named the issue E-cigarette or vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI).

            As of February of 2020, the CDC has reported 2,758 cases of EVALI with 64 deaths. While most vaping education focuses on nicotine, the majority of patients diagnosed with EVALI admitted to using nicotine and THC in their vaping devices. THC is just as detrimental to the body as nicotine when being inhaled through a vaping device (Kinney, W.H. et. Al. 2020). While the subjective data shows that THC is not as commonly used as nicotine in vaping devices, 85% of people diagnosed with EVALI in a study completed in Indiana admitted to using THC. There was a higher number of subjects that admitted to using THC were under 35 years-old, but the use of vaping devices in general showed little discrimination on age(Navon, L. et. Al. 2019). These numbers show the need and demand for education to for the cessation of vaping along with cessation from tobacco use.

The most readily available education for patients that are currently vaping will be statistics. There is a plethora of different studies that show detrimental numbers for the issues that arise with vaping. However, getting people to read a long list of numbers is unrealistic. Pamphlets should be made first explaining what EVALI is and how dangerous it can be. EVALI is much more than a simple case of pneumonia that will be knocked out with a round of Levaquin. It can and will be deadly if not treated quickly. Next, the numbers that are on the pamphlet should be generalized rather than broken down in different age groups or categories. This will shorten the list that is to be read by the patients. Numbers should never be falsified or skewed, but they should be concise.

The demographic that should be targeted are people that have developed respiratory issues or other illnesses that vape. The reasoning behind this is most people will not be concerned about issues that are not effecting them. If someone goes to the emergency room with dyspnea, and the doctor tells them to stop vaping, what are the real chances that they will stop? However, show the same person actual numbers or cases from individuals that became ill due to vaping and the benefits they received from quitting; they may be more apt to pay attention to statistics if they care about their health. However, like with smoking, some people will not quit until they are at fear of dying or becoming permanently ill.

The study will be subjective only, relying on patients to tell whether or not that have ceased to use vaping devices. Interviews should be performed of all patients in the study before the education takes place, in order to ensure all that are part of the study are current vape users. A second questionnaire should be utilized shortly after the group is educated to determine whether they have quit, then finally a third interview should be completed to those who stated they stopped vaping after a longer period of time, i.e. a year after they received the education, to determine how many stopped vaping and did not restart. This will show the effectiveness of the education program. The program will be transferrable to any community where people are vaping. The main safety risk of the patients will be developing EVALI and not stopping the use of vaping devices.
