biomechanical Assignment | College Homework Help

1. You are working with an orthopaedic surgeon who has asked you to use your biomechanical knowledge to help devise a treatment for a patient suffering from an irreparable subscapularis tear. The surgeon believes that transferring a still functional muscle group (ex. the Teres Major or Latissimus Dorsi) by releasing the tendon from its normal humerus attachment and anchoring it to another location near the anatomical subscapularis attachment may result in the patient regaining lost arm functions (see functions below) Functions: 1. Stabilize the glenohumeral joint in two ways i) compressing the humeral head medially against the scapula, ii) creating a balanced force couple with the muscle attached to the posterior side of the humeral head (e.g. the infraspinatus). 2. Produce internal rotation of the humerus. Using the knowledge you gained from the Muscle Anatomy & Function lectures, explain the anatomical/functional muscle factors as well as surgical factors (e.g. reattachment site) that must be considered when determining the ability of a given muscle to produce the desired functions. Be sure to relate these factors to their biomechanical effects on the stated shoulder functions and any others you find relevant. Please restrict your answer to 1 page (double spaced) plus up to 1 sketch to illustrate your thoughts. You do not need to reference the properties of any specific muscle group but can do so if you please. Subsculare Figure 1: Anterior view of shoulder complex. This is intended as a reference only.
